Coffee Shop Blues

I remember the soft cookie dough between my fingers:  Knead, knead, eat some, then  Twist each separated part, I twist into what we now call coffee shop blues.  A melody plays in my head  Though my hands are freezing,  I am kept warm by my mother’s blessings. Even when I am sleeping, I am awake to the patterns that form nets and cages.  I spill … Read More Coffee Shop Blues

Burnout

I am a world.  And my streams of blood live in vines of veins.  I tell myself this when I finally get out of bed  I remind myself when my roots detach and  I can no longer live as the shelter I thought I could be. I remind myself when the grinds of life  Bring about impending doom to  Crush our flowers to dust for … Read More Burnout

The Dream

My eyes reflect tiny glass  Broken and threatening bare feet I took them into the palms of my hand  Desperately holding onto the bittersweet Could I ask,  Where are you?  Laughing,  I’ve found hope.

Living

Today I woke to find amethyst growing in my kitchen. Broken glass never seemed so insignificant The metal living in my veins extracted itself as a mist through my pores. I open my window and pick up the phone.

Desert Bloom

Run from your shadows Into the arms of the enveloping sky.Dawn crawls forwardI witness the vastness of its prayerIt elicits a collective sigh. There are souls you can touchAnd healing you can imbibeParched roots and patient blooms wait to be rescuedBut you have to open your eyes.

Muted Sun

The horizon mirrored the grief Collectively hidden in a lie of isolation I watched the shine bleed out. I cradled my wary spirit And tried to hold yours, too. A paradox persists in these moments Where there is beauty in our sorrow And the muted sun returns as promised.

Evicting You

The poetry was wasted on you Love in itself is never a tragedyBut I grieve the secondsStolen by your presence in my mind. If you pay attention,You’d know my contempt is as strong as my loveGiven as its deserved. Contrary to what it believes,My heart does heal with time.Eventually it learned the wisdom of Pushing you out.

Fragments

The stars explode into fragments of glass and sawdust. I leap from the roof of an apartment complex, praying to become nameless. As my body rushes to the ground, I recall the hours of attempting to dig past my skin to reach my bones. Last chance for salvation Anything to escape the stain of others’ perception.

The Mirror

I am no one. (I am everyone) The sun burns holes in the swollen sky I am left beaten and worn Searching for safe ground to lay down my head. Troubled thoughts show themselves In trembling hands and reddened eyes For hours, I look into an old tarnished mirror I see screaming children, a young woman bleeding down her thighs, a blinding explosion, The … Read More The Mirror

Whispers and Stigma

Tears pour in smoke down her face I would wrap her in kisses and blessed cotton sheets But no amount of soothing words can battle the screams and needles ricocheting in her head. We are a spectacle, mocked by the circle of faces watching We are invisible, pushed to the margins, Where madness and pain are hushed by others, only so their children can … Read More Whispers and Stigma
